What’s That Strong Smell From My Furnace?

With a cold Minnesotan winter at our doorstep, have you recently turned on your furnace and noticed a strong burning or rotten egg-like smell throughout your home?

Why Does My Furnace Smell Like Its Burning?

During the summer months when your furnace is typically off, dust collects at the bottom of the furnace. When you turn your furnace on for the first time this year, it will blow that dust right up to your heat coil and burn off the excess dust sitting in your vent system. Once all the finer particles are burned off, the smell typically goes away within two to four days.

If you continue to smell a strong lingering burning note from your furnace and vents, please call an HVAC specialist and have them out to ensure a larger safety hazard isn’t at play.

Where’s That Musty Furnace Smell?

Another scent to be on the lookout for is one of mold and mildew. If there is a musty, mildew smell coming from your vents, your furnace filter could be overly dirty and need to be replaced. If the smell persists past getting your filter changed, we recommend getting your air ducts cleaned with our sanitization add-on.

Why Does My Furnace Smell Like Rotten Eggs?

Finally, if you smell sulfur, which is like encountering rotten eggs, somewhere in the home and you own a gas appliance, leave the premises immediately and call the gas company. Gas leaks are dangerous and need to be handled by a professional.
