How to prepare your home for hosting this Thanksgiving!

Routine maintenance can be a painful, dirty job. It can also be costly if neglected. There are several appliances in your home that make hosting significantly easier than it was years ago.  As you prepare your home and kitchen to be filled with friends and family this holiday season, every appliance you use has manufacture recommended routine maintenance. At Kura Home, we follow these recommendations to help prolong the life of your appliances and help them run more efficiently. Check out these tips to help your hosting experience go over smoothly.

  1. Degrease your range hood.

Your stove and range will be working overtime this holiday season. When you turn on the fan, it pulls the grease that would end up on your walls, ceiling, and other surfaces and pushes it out of your home. Before these fumes can get out of your home, they must go through a filter. This is one of the most neglected items we find in homes. There are several ways to clean this filter. First, remove the filter from the range hood. From there, you can run it under hot water, place it in the dishwasher, or degrease using a degreaser. The best product we have found available to consumers is Simple Green. Cleaning this filter will prolong the life of your range hood fan and help keep the air in your kitchen clean and clear. We recommend cleaning this filter once every three months.

  2. Clean and sharpen your garbage disposal.

While everyone is sound asleep from eating your delicious turkey, hopefully, you don’t end up in charge of dishes. But if you do, there’s sure to be leftovers that a lot of people shove down their garbage disposal. We clean and sharpen garbage disposals every three months. One of the easiest ways to do this is by putting ice down the garbage disposal with about a ½ cup of vinegar. The vinegar cleans and ice sharpens.

  3. Clean your dishwasher filter.

Many dishwashers that were installed in the previous five years have a filter in the bottom. This filter helps catch small debris from going through the drain tube causing a potential clog. If this filter is neglected, it can slow the process of cleaning your dishes and eventually your dishwasher will quit working. At Kura Home, we recommend cleaning this filter monthly. We visit our clients home once every three months and this is better than never, but if you’re striving to be the perfect homeowner and host, take the filter out and clean it monthly.

  4. Change your furnace filter.

Change your furnace filter days before clients come over. We recommend using a filter that has a MERV rating between 8 and 11. If you look through the filter, you shouldn’t be able to see through it. If you change this filter once every three months, you’ll be very impressed will the air quality improvements in your home.

  5. Fill your water softener!

If your guests are staying the night, they don’t want to take a shower in hard water! Fill your water softener with salt and set the hardness between 30 and 40. This will keep your guests’ skin nice and soft after they take a shower or wash their hands leaving them will all the warm feels from staying at your home.
