Hopefully you’ve never had a first hand experience with a fire in your home or business. But unfortunately most people have either had a fire in their own home or know someone that has experienced an unwanted fire. Today, we’ll share three quick tips on helping prevent fires in your home.
Fire Extinguishers
We recommend that each home has one fire extinguisher per floor and one in the garage. That means if you live in a 3 level home with an attached garage our suggestion would be that you have 4 fire extinguishers. There are many brands and price points of fire extinguishers. Without getting into too much detail we suggest that you don’t buy the cheapest one from the big box store (you get what you pay for, right?). We would also recommend that you get one that is rechargeable. Lastly, there are a few options for the types of fires that they are meant to be used on. Check the box carefully to ensure you are buying the one that fits your potential needs. Make sure you learn how to use it BEFORE any potential fire. The last thing you want to do is try and learn how to use it when you are trying to extinguish a fire.
Smoke Detectors
We recommend that you replace your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on an annual basis. Make a note in your calendar to do this once a year and test them to make sure they are working after replacing the batteries. January 1st is a great day for this task! The most frustrating thing about smoke detectors is they seem to run out of batteries at 2:00 in the morning… waking everyone in your house up!
Dryer Vent
Cleaning your exterior dryer vent a minimum of once per year is one of the most important annual maintenance tasks you can do for your home. Dryer vent fires are one of the leading causes of home fires. We suggest hiring a professional dryer vent cleaning company to come once per year to clean your dryer vent. Ask about discounts for signing up for an annual maintenance plan to get this done. It’s very easy to forget to call someone once per year, so if you are able to schedule it on an annual basis, that is ideal and can possibly save you money.
