Have you recently turned on your furnace and noticed a rusty or burning smell throughout your home?
During the summer months when your furnace is typically off, dust is collecting at the bottom of the furnace. When you turn your furnace on for the first time this year, it will blow that dust right up to your heat coil and burn off the excess dust sitting in your vent system. Once all the finer particles are burned off, the smell typically goes away within 2-4 days.
If you continue to smell a lingering burning note coming from your vents, please call an HVAC specialist and have them out to ensure a larger safety hazard isn’t at play.
Another smell to be on the lookout for is one of mold and mildew. If you have the mildew smell coming from your vents, your furnace filter could be overly dirty and need to be replaced. If the smell persists past getting your filter changed, we recommend getting your air ducts cleaned with our sanitization add-on.
Finally, if you are smelling rotten eggs or sulfur somewhere in the home and you own a gas appliance, leave the premises immediately and call the gas company. Gas leaks are dangerous and need to be handled by a professional.
